Fanaye Makeda Kebede (born May 7, 1985) also known by the mononym “Fanaye” is an R&B singer-songwriter, fashion designer, and businesswoman. She is the second-oldest sister of rock alternative/indie rock musician Alimah and the daughter of legendary jazz musician Amir Kebede. Fanaye was born in Baldwin Hills, CA alongside Alimah and her sister Desta. She and her family moved to Brooklyn, NY when she turned seven. She is also a former teen model who has modeled for GAP, Claire’s, and Tommy Hilfiger.
Fanaye has a voice that is regarded as one of the best voices among the current generation of female R&B singers. She is commended for her ability to sing in different vocal styles that can fit in multiple genres. Even though she is mainly known for R&B and alternative R&B, she has performed for pop, jazz, hip-hop, funk, and classical and even sub-genres such as pop rock, neo-soul, and Yé-yé (a style of 60’s European pop music).
As a songwriter, Fanaye is known for her explicit and melodramatic themes of sex, love, relationships, jealousy, womanhood, and even social issues. Fanaye has been credited for writing and producing music for over 100 artists.
